Man lured by pyramid scheme starved to death

A young man who had been lured into joining a pyramid sales ring was found dead outside a hospital in Jiangxi's Pingxiang City, a victim of malnutrition, police said yesterday.

A security guard called police when he found a man who was not breathing lying on the ground near the entrance of the hospital around 3:50am on December 27.

Police examined videos and started investigating after they failed to discover anything on the body of the dead man to verify his identity.

The next day, they discovered six locations used by a pyramid scheme based on clues provided by the taxi driver who carried the victim and two other men to the hospital.

Police said they seized eight leaders of the gang and rescued 31 members who were tricked into participating in a pyramid sales scam.

Police said that the 31 members only ate two meals a day with a small bowl of rice and some boiled cabbage or radish. The people were malnourished, police said.

All had been trapped after dating strangers with whom they chatted via QQ, an instant messaging service.

The investigation was continuing, and police did not release details on how the members were hooked by the gang or whether they were held against their will.
