Man not infected by HIV-tainted syringe hidden in taxi

A Beijing taxi passenger was cleared of HIV infection after three blood tests over a period of three months showed HIV-negative results. The man was stung by a HIV-tainted syringe poking out of the back pocket of a front seat in August.

The Beijing News said the 37-year-old passenger, Xu Tian, had sued the taxi company for compensation.

Xu took a taxi from Beijing Huatai Taxi Company on the evening of August 21 and was accidentally stung by an abandoned syringe that contained dubious solution. Xu was sent to a hospital and the syringe was found tainted by HIV virus.

Xu has taken three blood tests with the last one taken this Tuesday. The result was HIV-negative. But before he was declared safe, he had already sued Huatai Taxi Company, demanding compensation for his medical cost, time from work, and mental damage. Huatai made no comment.

Xu said he once asked the company for help, but a company official said they had nothing to do with this incident.
