Man pleads not guilty in crash scam
AN alleged car-crash extortion ring leader in Beijing pled not guilty of beating three teenagers before forcing them to deliberately run into cars in order to demand compensation.
The defendant surnamed Wu and four other alleged gang members from Guangdong Province went on trial on Monday for swindling and instigation, Beijing Morning Post reported yesterday.
Before staging an accident, the group members allegedly beat three teenagers with iron bars until their limbs were broken and gave them drugs so they wouldn't feel the pain.
The court heard two members drove a car to pull ahead of a target car, forcing it to overtake them while the other members riding a bicycle ran into the speeding vehicle and fell over, claiming they were injured.
Negotiation and compensation followed. The group allegedly made over 60,000 yuan (US$9,177) by running into several cars.
