Man punished for posting details of Bo police chief

A MAN has been ordered to serve seven days in detention for posting details online about the case of a former police chief, state media reported yesterday.

The leaked information revealed that Wang Lijun, the ex-police chief of the southwest city of Chongqing, traveled to Beijing with national security officers in February after leaving the US Consulate in nearby Chengdu, where he had divulged information that bought down high-profile politician Bo Xilai.

Citing information from the local national security bureau, the Chengdu Daily newspaper said an airline worker, also named Wang, gave the police chief's personal details to a friend. The information included the social security numbers of Wang and a national security officer, as well as flight details, apparently gleaned from travel documents. The paper identified the friend as a hotel worker, surnamed Mao, and said he posted the details online.

Mao "leaked national security secrets deliberately," the paper said. It said Mao signed papers accepting the punishment on Friday. Airline worker Wang received a warning.

Wang Lijun was sentenced to 15 years in jail for defection, bribery and abuse of power.

Bo was expelled from the Communist Party and is likely to face criminal charges.
