Man quizzed over death of 8-year-old girl

A MAN is being questioned over the death of an 8-year-old girl who went missing last Friday during a wedding celebration in Taizhou, a city in east China’s Jiangsu Province.

Wang Yanwen’s body was found on Monday beside a river, police said, and yesterday morning they had offered a reward of 50,000 yuan (US$8,145) for any clues to the whereabouts of 56-year-old Wang Zhi, a Taizhou native. He was caught later in the day.

The Yangtze Evening News said the girl, from Jiangsu’s Yangzhou City, had been taken to a relative’s wedding by her grandmother.

After lunch, the adults were chatting while the girl and a 9-year-old boy were playing in the fields. No one noticed the girl was missing until it was time for the grandmother to go home, the paper said.

The boy told villagers that a man on a scooter had called out to Wang by name, asking her to take him to where the lunch was, the paper reported, and the pair rode off together.

The boy said he chased after them asking to be taken too and the man had promised to come back for him.

A villager told the paper the man and girl were seen talking and laughing and it was assumed they were related.
