Man robs bank, assaults worker

POLICE are hunting for a masked man who robbed 590,000 yuan (US$ 89,075) in cash from a rural cooperative bank in Jiangsu Province on Monday, the case is under investigation, local government announced yesterday.

The suspect allegedly hit a staff member of the Shiliying branch of Rural Cooperative Bank in Xuyi County with an iron bar. He snatched away a strong box with 590,000 yuan in it when the staff member was carrying the box from the backyard into the bank, Yangtze Evening News reported yesterday.

The robbery happened about 7am, shortly after a money transport vehicle left the branch. It is still unknown if the robber acted alone.

A witness surnamed Zhang told the newspaper that he saw the suspect running toward the gate of the backyard with a hammer in the morning, but when he got downstairs the suspect had gone.

"The paths in the backyard are so complicated that people always get lost when they come to the bank," Zhang said, "but the suspect escaped along a pretty clear route, which means he was probably very familiar with the surrounding environment."

Other witnesses claimed they saw a man get away on a tricycle at that time, and that a bank worker rushed out and called a cab to give chase but lost him, the report said.

The suspect got on a tricycle and asked the driver to take him to Xinhai residential complex. However, the suspect didn't get off until after the driver had made several passes around the complex, a man claiming to be a -colleague of the driver told the newspaper.

The suspect refused to pay the driver and threatened him with a knife.

According to regulations, four people should be on a money transport vehicle - a driver, a cash carrier and two armed security guards.

Every time the vehicle arrives at a bank, an armed guard stays with the driver, and the other one enters the bank with the carrier. The carrier then hands over the cash inside the bank itself.

However, in this case, the robbery happened in the backyard and the cash truck had already left, which means the handling of the cash might not have followed proper procedures, the report said.
