Man runs amok with cleaver
A MAN was yesterday seized by police in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, for a frenzied attack with a butcher's cleaver that left 11 people injured.
The suspect, aged about 30, suddenly grabbed a cleaver from a butcher's outlet at a food market in downtown Guangzhou, said Southcn.com, a Guangzhou-based news Web portal.
He then "waved it crazily to attack pedestrians," the Website said.
The attacker started his rampage about 9:30am on Renji Road W. and continued into Renmin Road S. to the bank of Pearl River where he was subdued.
One of the injured people immediately called police and chased the attacker with friends to the riverside where they held him until police officers arrived minutes later.
All victims were sent to hospital and while one needed surgery, none was seriously injured.
A 20-year-old college student from neighboring Hunan Province was attacked after getting off a bus. The student was on a summer vacation trip to Guangzhou.
Another victim from Jiangxi Province in eastern China was on his way to visit a friend in hospital.
Guangzhou police said they were still trying to identify the man.
A police spokesman said the attacker "smelled bad."
The forensic assessment center of Guangzhou's Sun Yat-sen University found the man suffered a behavioral disorder, coupled with sporadic loss of consciousness, headaches and forgetfulness, which made him unable to explain his irrational behavior, the police spokesman said.
