Man sentenced to death though DNA test shows he isn't the raper
SEVEN police officers in central China's Henan Province are under investigation for allegedly hiding key evidence of a series of rapes and burglaries that led to death penalty for an innocent man.
Yu Pengfei, former deputy chief of Shangqiu City Public Security Bureau, was detained while another six police officers were relieved of their duties, reported today's China Youth Daily.
They were found to have concealed DNA test results in 12 cases of rape and burglary in 2007 which led to five men being wrongly sentenced from 15 years in jail to death from crimes they never committed.
Among the victims was Zhang Zhenfeng, 34, who already served three years in jail after being put on a death row with a two-year reprieve.
Zhang was caught in June 2007 on the charge of group raping three women and robbing cash, cell phones and jewelries in the cities of Zhoukou and Shangqiu.
Zhang allegedly confessed his crime in custody and gave the names of five accomplices Guo Xinkui, Guohui, Liuchao and Liu Chuanjun.
The turning point came in August when police discovered the real criminal Wang Yinguang, who was in jail on other charges.
