Man set himself alight in demolition compensation feud
A MAN set himself on fire in front of the Municipal Party Committee building in Jijing City, Shandong Province, to force the government to compensate him after his unauthorized buildings were demolished.
Zhang Yong, 51, poured petrol over his cotton coat and let it burn for just seconds before taking it off. He recruited some people to take pictures of the stunt that were posted online, attracting widespread attention, government officials said.
The officials claimed that Zhang, who is the legal executive of Jining Great Wall Oil Chemical Industry Science and Technology Center, directed the "chaos" on December 19 and publicized it online out of malice.
The unauthorized buildings belonging to Zhang were demolished in April, 2010. Zhang has repeatedly lodged complaints, agitating for excessive compensation with the city government, the officials said.
He even encouraged his weak mother and mother-in-law to stir up trouble at relative authorities, according to the officials who added that his "unreasonable demands" were never met.
A police investigation is ongoing, the report said.
