Man sets fire on bus after poor payout
A 64-year-old man was detained in Beijing on Tuesday after starting a fire on a long-distance bus, police said yesterday.
The incident happened when the suspect, surnamed Chen, was traveling to the capital from his home in north China鈥檚 Hebei Province, they said.
As the bus approached a checkpoint, Chen set light to his backpack, which was later found to contain a mix of gasoline, alcohol and cooking oil, police claimed.
He allegedly said he was on his way to a courthouse in the city to complain about the amount of money he had been paid as compensation for the demolition of his former home in Beijing.
He said that if the court failed to listen to him he would set fire to his backpack, police said.
However, when the bus stopped at the checkpoint, Chen panicked and decided to make his protest there and then, police said.
The driver stopped the bus as soon as he saw Chen trying to start the fire and shouted to his passengers to get off, police said.
No one was hurt, they said.
