Man sets self on fire to protest forced demolition

A bathhouse owner in Xinghua, a city in eastern Jiangsu Province, set himself alight yesterday morning to protest the forced demolition of his bathhouse as ordered by the local court.

Zhang Guihua poured gasoline over himself to stop workers from entering the bathhouse. When some workers came up to drag him away, Zhang lit up the fire, a neighbor who saw the whole incident told the Yangtze Evening News.

Zhang was seriously burned and rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Zhang rented the house in 1998 to run a public bath. The landlord wanted to take back the house in 2009 and filed a lawsuit against Zhang after he refused the compensation deal, Zhang's son told the newspaper.

The court ruled that Zhang should return the house to the owner in March 2009. After mediation failed, the court decided to carry out the enforced demolition, Xinghua government said at a press conference yesterday noon.

Zhang is now being treated in the hospital and still in critical conditions.
