Man shot in KTV crisis

POLICE have shot dead one man and detained four others after they allegedly tried to extort money from a karaoke bar in Wenzhou City in east China's Zhejiang Province.

The five suspects took a group of people hostage at knife-point in an unnamed bar in the city's Lucheng District on Sunday night, demanding the managers pay a "protection fee" every month, said a spokesman for the district police.

They had forced the bar managers to pay 5,000 yuan (US$750) before police arrived, the spokesman said.

They refused to drop their weapons when ordered to do so by police and attempted to escape with hostages, said the spokesman. They then attacked the police after they fired warning shots.

"Police officers had to shoot them to ensure the safety of the public," he said.

One suspect was shot dead and two were wounded and taken to hospital. They were said to be in stable condition, he said.

Another two suspects fled but were picked up by police yesterday morning, he said.

Police also confiscated five 60-centimeter-long knives.

Police are continuing their investigation but initial inquiries show the five suspects came from the neighboring Jiangsu Province.
