Man slays road accident victim to avoid high bills

A motorcyclist who choked a man to death after severely injuring him in a crash to avoid paying the victim's medical costs in southwestern Sichuan Province has been arrested.

The 36-year-old suspect, surnamed Wu, is facing a charge of murder, said prosecutors in Yanting County.

Wu knocked off a 60-year-old pedestrian surnamed Yang when speeding across Shuguang Village in the morning of October 6. Seeing Yang was unconscious, Wu refused the help from passers-by and dragged the victim to the roadside and suffocated him to death while pretending to give first-aid, Chengdu Business Daily reported today.

Wu called the police claiming it was an ordinary traffic accident, but the truth came out after forensic test showed the bruise on Yang's neck.
Wu admitted to killing the victim so that he could pay one-off compensation instead of bearing the burden of Yang's long-time medical costs.
