Man spends 100M yuan to give homes to villagers

AN entrepreneur and village secretary in Henan Province, in east-middle China, spent 100 million yuan (US$16.3 million) from his pocket to build a seven-floor residential building to give to the people in his village as a gift, young100.cn reported today.

Liu Tingjie is president of Henan Jinpeng Group Co Ltd and chairman of the Henan Songyue Chamber of Commerce. The 100 million yuan came from his earnings from his company, the report said.

The building is still under construction but is close to being finished.

Liu assumed office as village secretary of Laojing Village in Henan Province when he was 24. He founded a cement mill, steel window factory and other projects to lift up the village economically.

Laojing Village's per capita income reached 5,000 yuan thanks to Liu's efforts while the average income was 500 yuan in the past. "It's my duty to take good care of people who are left in the village." Liu said.
