Man stabs 5 to death on New Year's Eve

BEIJING police have caught a man who killed his girlfriend and four friends – including a pregnant woman - after celebrating New Year's Eve.

Zhang Wei, 30, attempted suicide by slashing his wrists but failed after he called police to report the stabbings, today's Chutian Golden Newspaper reported.

After dinner at a restaurant, the couple went home with their friend Shen to Beijing's Daxing District, where Zhang and Shen started to quarrel, the report said.

Zhang allegedly stabbed Shen to death with a kitchen knife, then killed his girlfriend who was screaming. He then rushed to Shen's home and killed his pregnant wife and her parents, the newspaper reported, citing police.

Police said the original dispute was over "trivial stuff."
