Man still waiting for compensation
A MAN in Gansu Province has not received compensation promised by police after they illegally detained him on libel charges for over a week after a cross-province man-hunt.
Police of Wuzhong City in neighboring Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region have not make good on the promise of 30,000 yuan (US$4,500) compensation and a written apology to Wang Peng after they admitted they were wrong, as the case was a civil dispute, rather than a criminal offence, People's Daily reported yesterday.
Wang was detained by Wuzhong police on November 23 because he had claimed online that his university roommate, Ma Jingjing, may have cheated in a 2007 civil servant recruitment exam. Ma's parents are high-ranking officials.
He was released from a detention center in Wuzhong after eight days.
