Man suffers serious bone fractures for saving villagers
A 53-year old man suffers multiple bone fractures after bearing the weight of a cement pole weighing more than one ton, according to Anhui Province local media.
The old man, Hu Zhongwen, a resident of Huoqiu County, Anhui Province, was asked to transport wire poles for power grid upgrading. He teamed up with two women in their 60s and 30s, and a 15-year-old boy. When the pole was taken off from the cart to be placed in the designated spot, the older woman ran out of strength and let the pole go. To prevent the other woman and the boy from being crushed, Hu carried the pole by himself and asked them to let go. All the weight then fell on Hu's shoulder and crushed his bones. Villagers immediately sent Hu to a nearby hospital.
Chang Mei, the woman Hu saved, said: "My nephew and I might have been killed by the pole without the help of Hu. Now the only thing I can do is take care of his family and help with their farm work."
The doctor said half of the bones in Hu's body were fractured. " He will suffer pain in his shoulders, waist and legs. If recovery goes well, he may be able to live a normal life. But he cannot do farm work anymore."
When asked why he decided to carry the heavy pole by himself, he said: "The others under the pole were a woman and child. If I also let it go, they would have gotten hurt. I just hoped to keep them safe."
However, Hu's poor family is still facing the high medical costs from his accident. Hu has been discharged from the hospital after failing to pay the bills.
