Man who killed baby left in car executed
A CAR thief who killed a baby in March was executed today in Changchun, in northeast China’s Jilin Province, People’s Daily reported.
Zhou Xijun, 49, was convicted of killing a two-month-old baby after robbing the SUV where the baby's parents had left their young son in the provincial capital Changchun in March. Zhou was sentenced to death on May 27. The local higher court upheld the death sentence on July 24.
The court said Zhou surrendered when he was cornered and had nowhere to escape. Considering the gravity of his crime and the social upheaval it had caused, he could not be treated leniently.
The unfortunate incident occurred on March 4 when the boy's parents left the baby in the back seat and went to a grocery store in Changchun.
Zhou drove off with the SUV but did not see the baby in the car. He claimed he used to be a manager in a company and had a car, but lost it after losing his job. Embarrassed, he decided to steal a car.
After the baby boy started crying, a frightened Zhou strangled him to death and buried his body at Yongfa Township. Zhou said he was aware of the massive manhunt in the city from the radio.
He wanted to put the baby by the roadside but was afraid that the baby would freeze to death. He said he killed the baby in a moment of panic.
