Man who killed his own family appeals over compensation
A Beijing man put on death row for murdering six family members has appealed against a court decision ordering him to pay 3.43 million yuan (US$515,309) in compensation.
Li Lei, 30, pleaded guilty to murdering his wife, sister, parents and two sons and was sentenced to capital punishment. But he told his attorney he couldn't afford the compensation.
Li's attorney, Pan Zhidong, told Beijing Morning Post yesterday that Li had decided to appeal over the amount, saying he had no idea about Li's personal assets because Li had never told him.
The compensation is for Li's two grandmothers and his parents-in-law.
The lawyer on behalf of Li's parents-in-law said the amount would be decided by the court finally.
Li hacked his wife to death with a knife after a quarrel in their apartment in Beijing's Daxing District last November. He then went on a killing spree, slaughtering his younger sister, his parents and two sons, who lived in the same apartment.
The Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court sentenced Li to death recently, deprived his political rights for life, and ordered him to pay the compensation.
Li found family conflicts difficult and committed the atrocity in a brutal way that shocked the whole country, the court said.
Li was arrested in Sanya in southern China's Hainan Province in November, a week after the murders.
A psychiatric assessment report submitted to the court said Li was free of mental problem when he committed the crime and was competent to take criminal responsibility for his actions, the Beijing Municipal People's Procuratorate said during the trial.
