Man who knows 6 languages gets jail for pirating translated films
A MAN who learned six foreign languages received a suspended three-year prison sentence for copyright infringement after having translated nearly 400 foreign movies and sold the illegal CDs with Chinese subtitles on the Internet.
The 30-year-old surnamed Liu of Jiangyin city of eastern Jiangsu Province was given the sentence with a reprieve of three years and six months by a city court yesterday.
After Liu graduated in the economics of law from a reputable university, he never hunted for a job but instead became devoted to introducing overseas indie movies, his favorites, to domestic fans, the Yangtze Evening News reported.
Such movies were harder to access in China’s mainland than big studio productions, and to translate them, Liu learned English, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Korean.
In 2007, he started selling discs to which he added Chinese subtitles on Taobao, China’s biggest online shopping platform. Every disc was priced at 2.9 yuan (48 US cents), he said.
Jiangyin police caught him in April and seized nearly 3,600 discs at his home. Liu said he had known what he was doing was illegal but he said he went ahead because he loved the movies and he had gained status among many netizens, the newspaper reported.
