Man who posted obscene photos of ex-girlfriend on Internet as revenge gets 1 year in prison

A MAN surnamed Cao was given one year in prison and ordered to pay compensation of 5,500 yuan (US$903) for spreading indecent photos of his ex-girlfriend on the Internet as revenge for their breakup.

Cao was convicted of "spreading pornographic articles” on November 7 by Court of Xigu District in Lanzhou, the capital of northwestern Gansu Province.

From May 2011 to 2012, Cao sent obscene photos of his 27-year-old ex-girlfriend to his Internet friends through renren.com, his QQ email box and QQ in spite, according to Southern Metropolis Daily. The photos identified her by surname, year of birth and hometown and they spread very fast on the Internet, which the court said caused a very bad influence on society.

Cao’s behavior also cast a negative light on the Lanzhou Public Security Bureau since the public was led to believe the ex-girlfriend was a police officer, though she was not, the report said.

The Xigu Branch of the Lanzhou Public Security Bureau found 100 photos in the folder and 94 of them are considered to be pornographic, the report said.

The public prosecutor filed a case against Cao on July 26 but it was dismissed due to lack of evidence. On October 14, the prosecutor refiled the case. The Court of Xigu District issued a verdict on Thursday, and handed down a one-year sentence as well as ordering him to pay compensation of 1,500 yuan in medical costs and 4000 yuan in additional compensation to his ex-girlfriend.
