Man whose homemade bomb killed 2 may get death sentence
THE man who set off a fatal explosion in a bank robbery attempt last December said he was "abetted" to commit the crime, according to today's hearing at the Wuhan Intermediate People's Court in central Hubei Province.
Wang Haijian, 25, said one of his two partners, Wang Wei, encouraged him to make explosives and plan the robbery. He was an accomplice rather than the main culprit.
Asked why he began to make explosive devices in 2010, Wang Haijian said he just wanted to sell them, instead of using them for the bank robbery.
"I spent too much money making the explosives but didn't sell any. I was hard up and thought a robbery might relieve my stress," he said.
Prosecutors said Wang Haijian put the hidden explosives in front of a bank in Wuhan and detonated them at 5:30pm last December when bank clerks were carrying cash to a bank vehicle.
Wang said he felt nervous and "accidentally" press the button on a remote controller. The explosion killed two people and injured 15 others.
Wang's lawyer said he is likely to get a death sentence. "We are trying hard to get him a reprieve and hope he won't be executed immediately."
