Manhunt for escaped killers

POLICE today recovered a hijacked taxi used by four escaping prisoners who killed a guard in Hohot in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

More than 150 checkpoints have been set up in major roads across the city, and the manhunt has spread to 12 neighboring cities.

The taxi was found nearly 10 kilometers from the city's No. 2 prison, where the convicts beat the guard to death and injured a janitor when they escaped on Saturday, China National Radio reported today.

The four had 700 yuan (US$102.50) with them so that they could have hired transport after abandoning the cab, according to Southern Metropolis Daily.

Gao Bo, Qiao Haiqiang, Dong Jiaji, and Li Hongbin killed a guard named Lan Jianguo and used his clothes to dress up as prison guards.

"They then followed another guard through the prison gate," said a prison official surnamed Liu. "They knocked out the officer with a blunt object after he confronted them, and quickly left."

The men have been listed as wanted by the Ministry of Public Security, with a reward of up to 50,000 yuan for their capture. Those with information should call 0471-2399052, 0471-2399028, 13624818611 or 13904716931.
