Manhunt launched after slaying in Nanjing tied to 6 earlier murders

POLICE are offering 100,000 yuan (US$15,850) for information leading to the arrest of a man suspected of killing a person in an armed robbery yesterday in front of a bank in Nanjing, capital of eastern China's Jiangsu Province.
The suspect was identified by police as one of the country's most wanted killers who allegedly murdered six people in six armed robberies in Changsha, capital of the central province of Hunan, and the southwestern city of Chongqing between April 2004 and last June.
In the Nanjing case yesterday, the robber shot the victim in the head after he walked out of a branch of the Agricultural Bank of China just before 10am and took 200,000 yuan the victim had just withdrawn from the bank, police said. The 42-year-old victim was a construction company worker.
Witnesses said the suspect got on a bus and fled. Police later stopped the bus at a toll gate and cordoned off the highway, but found no trace of the suspect.
Nanjing police have launched a manhunt and are collaborating with police in Changsha and Chongqing to nail down the suspect, Pei Jun, deputy director of the Nanjing Public Security Bureau, told a press conference yesterday.
Police released two mugshots of the suspect, who was said to be in his 40s, between 1.70 and 1.80 meters tall and of medium build. He has dark skin and splayed feet and speaks nonstandard Mandarin.
Witnesses said the suspect approached the victim when he was about to get in a car, holding a gun to his head and pulling the trigger. A large pool of blood and a shell case were left at the scene, China News Service reported.
"I heard a sudden loud noise. I though it was firecrackers. Then I saw the man lying in blood," a witness surnamed Chen said, according to the report.
1.1 million yuan bounty
Police had already offered a 1.1 million yuan bounty on the gunman, who was listed on the country's most wanted list, after he committed the six previous armed robberies.
Four of the armed robberies occurred in Changsha. A man opened fire during an attempted robbery last June before fleeing empty-handed. In October 2010, he allegedly killed a victim during a robbery. In December 2009, a man believed to be the same robber killed a man with a shot to the head and robbed him of 45,000 yuan. In October 2009, he shot dead a man with a home-made gun.
Two earlier crimes attributed to the same man took place in Chongqing.
In May 2005, the gunman and an accomplice snatched a bag, shot dead a couple and injured a pedestrian.
And in April 2004, the same man is said to be responsible for killing one woman and wounded another after robbing them of 70,000 yuan.
Police concluded the crimes were committed by the same suspect by comparing photos and because the methods employed were very similar. Police described the killer as particularly cold-blooded as he always shoots victims in the head.
