Manhunt on for cop killer

POLICE in northwest China are offering a reward of 100,000 yuan (US$14,600) and beefing up security checks to hunt a vegetable wholesaler who allegedly shot dead a policeman who responded to a domestic dispute between him and his wife on Tuesday night.

Police set up checkpoints at major roads in Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province, and checked every automobile looking for the man who escaped from the scene after the fatal shooting.

A woman surnamed Liu went to the Weiyuan Road Police Station on Tuesday to report that her husband, Fu Xiaolin, 39, accusing her of having extramarital affairs, had "beaten" her with a gun, Xinhua news agency cited close sources as saying.

The policeman Dou Yong, 40, and his colleagues then visited Liu's home in a six-story-building in the community to settle the dispute.

Liu opened the door and let Dou in. But Fu allegedly fired a handgun at Dou in a dispute. The wife ran from the home with her daughter in the confsion and called police again.

More police responded, trying to storm the home and catch Fu, but he got away.

Lanzhou police issued a wanted notice for Fu early yesterday morning.
