Manslaughter considered after fatal boat crash

POLICE are considering manslaughter charges after a fatal boating accident in Zhejiang Province.

The accident happened on Thursday – Dragon Boat Festival Day – on Qiandao Lake in Zhejiang's Chun'an County. It killed Ye Fei, a senior female student from Shanghai Normal University and injured several others.

The local maritime authority said the drivers of the two boats were negligent but Yu Wuming was mainly responsible for the accident.

Yu's larger boat ran into Ye's boat at 10:45am. Ye was later pronounced dead in Chun'an No. 1 Hospital. A woman tourist on the same boat was pronounced brain dead on Saturday.

Yu's boat was reportedly passing Ye's boat when the accident happened, according to the maritime authority.

Ye, 22, had gone to Qiandao Lake with a classmate surnamed Lin from Shanghai during the three-day festival holiday and the boat tickets were bought by her father.

Lin was in shock after the accident and needed counseling. Shanghai Normal University has sent a task force to Chun'an to help counsel those involved.

The two boats belonged to a company which began operating on April 18.

The Hangzhou Qiandao Lake Hengtong Yachting and Boating Co Ltd was the result of the merger of four local yachting companies and reportedly has 174 yachts and boats in its fleet.
