Many frown on idea of school lessons via iPad

A PLAN to equip first-year students with iPads in a primary school in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, was shelved due to mounting pressure from the media.

The parents committee of Nanshan Experimental School had to halt the plan to buy iPads for their children after growing online criticism over the teaching method, local Daily Sunshine reported today.

A total of 88 students were required to buy an iPad for their Chinese lessons, sparking a heated debate among netizens and parents on the need for such an expensive gadget.

Most of the parents favored to buy an iPad with only six parents suggested for a cheaper brand, said a parent surnamed Peng, showing the result of a vote by the parents committee.

"The decision to order iPads was made by the committee, not the school. We only differed on the choice of brands and we respect the decision of the majority," said another parent surnamed Li.

The school has had more than 10 years of experience in teaching Chinese lessons with computer, said Zhang Zuzhi, a teacher at the primary school.
