Maotai town leader probed for ordering forced relocation

The vice director of Maotai Town in southwest Guizhou Province has been suspended from his job for ordering forced relocation of scores of vendors from a street, which the town decided to line with shops that only sell Kweichow Moutai, a famous liquor produced locally.
Renhuai City government, which rules over Maotai Town, is now investigating the allegation that Yuan Rentao, vice mayor, "has treated small vendors rudely and caused bad influence in the local society," Xinhua quoted a city spokesman as saying.
Local authorities have been told to return confiscated goods to the vendors, make public apology to them, and compensate their losses, Xinhua reported today.
Yuan led a team of policemen and urban management officers to drive away the scores of vendors from the street on May 3 and smashed the stores of those who refused to move, according to a prime-time CCTV news report.
The vendors said the team smashed their stores using clubs and hammers "just like robbers."
There are more than 100 small shops on the street with about 40 engaged in alcohol business and the rest are groceries, pharmacies and restaurants.
