Marking 60 years of friendship

CHINA and Pakistan sealed a series of agreements yesterday, as the two countries reaffirmed to maintain an all-weather friendship.

The signing ceremony followed talks between Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and visiting Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani at the Great Hall of the People at the start of Gilani's visit to Beijing marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

"I wish to stress here that no matter what changes might take place in the international landscape, China and Pakistan will remain forever good neighbors, good friends, good partners and good brothers," Wen said in remarks before the media following the talks.

"I do believe that this visit will give a strong boost to the friendship and cooperation between our two countries and take that friendship and cooperation to a new high," he added.

Gilani echoed Wen's remarks and praised China as "the most reliable friend and all-weather strategic partner."

Gilani thanked the Chinese government and Chinese people for their selfless help and support to the Pakistani side.

Pakistan is willing to work together with China to step up bilateral cooperation in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, investment, trade, finance and people-to-people exchanges, he said.

Wen said that Pakistan has made great sacrifices for and contributions to the global war against terrorism, urging the international community to understand and support Pakistan's efforts to maintain domestic stability and advance the economic and social development.

"Pakistan's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected," he added.

The two leaders later witnessed the signing of three agreements on economic and technology cooperation, banking and mining. An accord on military cooperation also expected to be signed.

Before the closed-door talks, Wen held a welcoming ceremony for Gilani, who arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday evening for a four-day visit to China.

China-Pakistan ties were forged just two years after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
