Mars 'flight' sounds a success
THE Chinese volunteer in a 520-day simulated trip to Mars sent his first e-mail today after 27 days of "flying," the People's Liberation Army Daily reported.
Wang Yue, 27, a teacher at the China Astronaut Research and Training Center in Beijing, said in the e-mail that all experiments went smoothly in the isolated cabin where he and five other researchers were imitating a manned flight to Mars.
China is in charge of three experiments in the Russian-organized event, including non-verbal communication, traditional Chinese medicine, and biological clock adjustment.
Because of the experiments, all six of them have to sleep with electrodes and sensors attached to their bodies and they are getting used to them, Wang said.
As a football fan, Wang told media earlier that he was sad to miss this year's FIFA world Cup. But he said in the e-mail that he kept up to date with every game through the Internet.
The six researchers have even formed a band to pass the time. Wang is the drummer, while three Russians play bass and a Frenchman plays guitar. The Italian researcher is the lead singer.
The project started on June 3 and was designed to test how humans cope with long space journeys.
The six "astronauts" will conduct more than 100 "space experiments," and the heavy work load was designed to test the limits of human endurance.
Wang said he was in perfect health now, waking up at 7:30am, working out every day, and reading e-books.
