Masked wax stars ‘protest’ against smog
THE wax figures of celebrities in a north China museum were donned with air pollution masks in a protest against the widespread smog.
Staff at the wax museum in Taiyuan City, capital of Shanxi Province, put white masks on statues of Barack Obama, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Jackson and other celebrities on Thursday, according to Chinanews.com. A performance at the museum raised public awareness for environmental protection.
Visitors to the museum were also asked to wear masks.
Pictures posted on Sina Weibo showed masked visitors striking poses with the mask-wearing celebrities. The pictures have gone viral on the Internet, with netizens praising the show as a clever way to expose the threat of smog in China.
In recent years, swathes of the country have struggled with heavy smog, slashing visibility and posing health hazards.
