Mass food poisoning mars crayfish festival
At least 70 people suffered diarrhea early this morning after attending a crayfish festival last night, said officials of Ruichang City in eastern Jiangxi Province.
The patients are being treated in several local hospitals and doctors said the diarrhea was caused by food poisoning as these people consumed too much crayfish or other unclean food, China News Service reported.
Around 4,000 people feasted on the freshwater crustacean at the festival organized by the city government.
The organizers denied an allegation that they assigned each government department some quotas to sell tickets so as to recoup the 4 million yuan (US$625,204) invested in the festival.
A netizen revealed that the government ordered its subsidiaries to buy tickets and asked local real estate companies to buy at least 100 tickets each. Several county officials admitted they had bought "hundreds of tickets" at 380 yuan to 580 yuan each.
Ruichang City government clarified that it ordered the departments to promote the festival, but didn't ask them to buy tickets, the report said.
