Match-fixing probes ferret out more football officials

More local football officials including one in Chongqing are being questioned by police after some of the country's top soccer figures were accused of taking bribes from locals to allow them to hold friendly matches.

It has been confirmed that Gao Jian, director of Chongqing Football Management Center, was assisting police investigation over Xie Yalong, former vice chairman of the Chinese Football Association.

During Gao's tenure, the East Asia Football Championship 2008 was held in Chongqing despite competition among several Chinese cities including Shanghai and Hangzhou.

The event's major sponsor, Japanese advertising agency Dentsu, preferred Shanghai and Hangzhou as host cities for men's and women's matches respectively but Chongqing won all votes as the exclusive host.

Xie, a Chongqing native, didn't attend promotion activities by other two competitors Guangzhou and Changsha but appeared positive on an inspection tour of Chongqing that the city would win. Soccer fans and journalists suspected there were some under-the-table deals.

Moreover, Xie's case may also involve former and current national team players as it was widely accepted that a player would pay about 100,000 yuan (US$14,800) to 300,000 yuan to realize his dream of representing China.

Between 2005 and 2009, a total of 108 players had been on or off the payroll of Chinese national team. The frequent staff changes were never reported before.
