Math teacher suspended over alleged beatings

A MATH teacher at a primary school in central China has been suspended for allegedly beating and ordering students to beat an eight-year-old student and two others more than 300 times with sticks because she failed to finish her homework.

Zhang Guopu, an official with the Education and Sport Bureau of Yancheng District, said a team of educators, policemen and government officials will investigate claims by the girl's father that his daughter suffered severe internal bleeding in her buttocks and legs, yesterday's Orient Today reported.

The girl, Zhang Jinjin, said she and other two classmates were ordered to stand in front of the teacher's desk on May 13 after their math teacher, surnamed Huang, found they hadn't finished their homework.

Huang then ordered the other 32 students to beat the three with wooden sticks. Each student was ordered to beat them 10 times and anyone who didn't complete the quota would have been punished, Zhang said.

They were given 320 strokes each. Huang also beat them himself and didn't allow them to go home early despite their injuries, Zhang said.

Her father called police when she returned home in tears.

The school's headmaster is also being investigated over the incident and may face punishment, Zhang Guopu said.

Huang won an award that named him an "Excellent Teacher" in the village this year due to the high scores achieved by his students.
