Math teacher tortures students over homework

AN award-winning primary school math teacher in Luohe City, central Henan Province has been suspended for allegedly ordering students to beat an eight-year-old girl 320 times with a stick as she failed to finish homework.

Zhang Guopu, an official with the Yancheng District Education Bureau, said a team of educators, policemen and local officials will investigate the claim by the girl's father that his daughter suffered severe bruises from the beating, Orient Today reported.

The girl, Zhang Jinjin, had to lie prostrate on bed to relieve acute pain in her hips. She said she and two other classmates were ordered to stand in front of the teacher's desk after Huang, the teacher, found they didn't finish homework on May 13.

Huang then ordered 32 students in the classroom to beat the three with a stick 10 times each, and warned that anyone who fails to finish the homework would face the same punishment.

The three students each got 320 whips and Huang forbade them to go home despite their injuries, the father said. He reported to police after his daughter came home in tears.

Zhang Guopu said the school headmaster would also face punishment after they collected sufficient evidence. The girl has received a forensic examination of her wounds.

Huang was awarded the title of "outstanding teacher" this year for the high scores of his students.
