Matmo kills 2, as Rammasun toll hits 62
THE death toll from super typhoon Rammasun in China has reached 62, with 21 people missing, while Typhoon Matmo has claimed two lives.
The strongest typhoon to hit south China in four decades, Rammasun affected 11 million people in the provinces of Guangdong, Hainan and Yunnan, as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
A total of 862,000 people were resettled and 261,000 are in urgent need of basic necessities, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said yesterday. The typhoon caused economic losses of 38.5 billion yuan (US$6.25 billion).
The ministry also said two people were killed and two were missing after Matmo hit the provinces of Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shandong and Guangdong. Guangdong and Jiangxi each reported one death.
Yesterday, 251,000 people had been relocated, with 2,800 in urgent need of supplies, it said.
