Mayor and wife on bribery charges

A FORMER mayor and his wife in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region have been charged with taking bribes worth 31 million yuan (US$4.54 million), the region's prosecutors told Xinhua news agency today.

Local police have completed their investigation into Xu Guoyuan, the former mayor of Chifeng City, and his wife Li Minjie, and handed the case to the Baotou City People's Procuratorate, the report said.

Xu was "double designated" on December 27, 2007 after it was found he had been involved in breaches of law.

"Double designation" is a special investigative procedure under which a Party official is ordered to explain allegations of disciplinary violations or corruption at a designated time and place.

His Chinese Communist Party membership was revoked and he was sacked as mayor on January 23 this year.

The disciplinary authority's investigation found that Xu and his wife collected 10.48 million yuan from early 2002 until July 2007 in return for helping real estate developments, approving projects and offering career promotions.

He received gifts worth 3.61 million yuan from May 2002 to October 2007.

During the investigation, the couple confessed they had taken another 13.37 million yuan and US$430,000 in cash and 153 expensive gifts valued at 1.72 million yuan between 2002 and 2007.
