Mayor apologizes 2 years later to boy hit by his car
THE mayor of Xingtai County in Hebei Province "apologized to the boy" after a recent media report that a government minivan carrying him and other officials ran a red light and knocked downed the boy two years ago.
Gu Pengtu admitted it was inappropriate that he didn't get off the car to help the young victim after the accident happened. Gu was accused of indifferent as he walked away after the boy Li Xiaolin was sent to a hospital.
Gu and other officials stayed in the van and told others to contact the hospital and pay for boy's medical bill, China Youth Daily reported today.
"The parents made excessive demand for compensation and we are negotiating with them," Gu told the newspaper. Xingtai County government hoped to solve the problem through legal process, he added.
"We will settle the issue as soon as possible under the mediation of the court," said Gu.
The boy was hit in March 2009 and suffered serious brain damage and mental problems afterwards. The driver was ruled fully responsible for the accident.
The county government only paid 400,000 yuan for hospital bills, but didn't pay compensation for the boy's mental damage, follow-up treatment and other expenses.
