Mayor caught in protest
VILLAGERS in Chizhou City in east China's Anhui Province blocked a road and overturned the mayor's car in a protest at demolition compensation they considered too low.
Up to 1,000 residents had been blocking the main road to the city since November 2, complaining to every passer-by and driver about compensation they deemed unfair, yesterday's Oriental Morning Post reported.
When they spotted a black Audi on November 3 and realized the driver was the mayor, Fang Xiping, they threw stones at the windows and demanded that he get out, it was reported on the local news portal Newssc.org yesterday.
Police officers helped Fang escape but some villagers toppled his car. Pictures of the incident were posted online.
Villagers said that they only received 10,000 yuan (US$1,505) compensation for each 666.67 square meters of their land, one third less than the authorities had previously promised them.
The rest of the compensation had been spent on their medical insurance and tax, which they found unacceptable.
One villager, Xu Shaohua, said the farmers had toiled for years to recover land that had been just infertile rubble before.
The authorities had announced plans to level 216 square kilometers of farmland to be paved over to make way for an industrial park and threatened forced demolition if villagers didn't accept compensation.
