Mayor comforts pregnant tourist hurt in restaurant fight
THE mayor of Zhangjiajie, a tourist city in central Hunan Province, expressed his sympathy for a pregnant visitor who was beaten up by a local restaurant owner in a dispute and nearly had a miscarriage.
Zhao Xiaoming called the woman surnamed Wang on Sunday and learned about her hospital treatment, Wang's husband surnamed Yang said.
The mayor also sent his secretary and the city's police chief to the hospital to see the couple on Monday and brought them 4,000 yuan (US$634.8) in cash and some fruit, today's Morning Express said.
City spokesman Wang Jianjun said the woman will be sent to her home in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province for further treatment and the restaurant owner will be punished if there is anything wrong with the baby.
Yang and his wife went to Zhangjiajie, Yang's birthplace, on January 26 to spend the part of their Spring Festival holidays there. They ordered four dishes in a restaurant near their hotel, but the last dish didn't arrive until an hour later and the couple decided to return it because they didn't touch it.
But the restaurant owner insisted that they pay for it and carry it with them. The argument soon turned into a fistfight, Yang said.
Later he posted his experience on Weibo.com and it was retweeted more than 7,000 times. The local urban management department has started a probe into the case, the paper said.
