Mayor ordered to apologize for forced demolition death

INVESTIGATORS in northeastern China's Jilin Province ordered the mayor of its capital city to apologize to all of the citizens for a forced demolition death.

Changchun Mayor Cui Jie's apology follows the dismissal of Xie Huawei, a district mayor, in connection with the death of a woman during a forced demolition, Legal Daily reported.

Liu Shuxiang, 50, was crushed to death under the rubble of a collapsed building when dozens of excavators and several hundred gangsters holding sticks tore down 14 dormitory buildings of the Changchun Film Studio on March 26.

She called 110 four times in an hour for help but police only arrived 50 minutes later.

Police have detained 11 Changchun Xinke Real Estate Development Company staff members on suspicion of carrying out the forced demolition.

Xinke staff allegedly believed "no one was inside" the house and the local police station told Southern Metropolis Daily they weren't aware of the incident or the victim.

The demolition continued for seven hours until 4am on March 27. More than 50 citizens gathered at the demolition site and blocked the road at 7am, carrying a banner reading "Clamp down on killers."

Police finally dug Liu's body out on the afternoon of March 28. Investigators said forced demolitions in the area had taken place three times between May, 2010 and January, 2011 – but local officials always turned a blind eye.

Xinke assigned a firm to carry out the demolition in 2008 and this company repeatedly intimidated the residents, cutting off their water, heat and electricity to force them move out.
