Mayor's visit to comedian's jet draws flaks

THE government of Changde, a city in central Hunan Province, said yesterday that its mayor rushed to the city's airport to meet China's best-known comedian after his private jet made an emergency landing there "out of respect for the cultural celebrity."

Mayor Chen Wenhao and other city officials rushed to meet Zhao Benshan after his private jet landed at the airport due to poor weather conditions on route to Guangzhou on May 2. The airport general manager personally guided the jet landing.

The news first appeared on Carnoc.com, a domestic aviation web portal, with a picture of Chen and other officials posing with Zhao. The story sparked a wave of criticism online, blaming the public servants of not doing their jobs, People's Daily reported today.

"Will the mayor show the same attitude if a normal airline flight makes an emergency landing?" a netizen said. "Why should the mayor show up at the airport? An emergency landing can be done by following standard procedures," another netizens said.

Zhao is a household name in China for his hilarious short plays performed during the CCTV Spring Festival gala show in the past 20 years. He was elected a deputy to the National People's Congress.

The mayor met him "out of respect for a cultural celebrity and other passengers on board," said Xu Limei, an official with the publicity department of Chengde government, adding that the mayor visited Zhao in his personal time.
