McDonald’s beverage laced with disinfectant
A father and his young son were rushed to hospital after drinking hot chocolate containing disinfectant at a McDonald’s outlet in southwest China’s Chongqing City.
The father, surnamed Feng, 46, took his 4-year-old to have lunch at a McDonald’s in the Liangjiang New Area, Chongqing Evening News reported.
The boy put his beverage down after just one sip, and Feng tasted it to see what was wrong with it and immediately spat it out.
“I took a swig and it tasted sour,” he said, adding that his tongue and throat began tingling 10 seconds later.
Feng complained to staff, who suspected it was tainted with disinfectant and immediately took the two to hospital, where they were determined to be in good health but were kept for further checks, the paper reported.
McDonald’s told the paper that a worker mistakenly used disinfectant instead of hot water when making the beverage and promised to tighten up its training and management practices.
In a statement to Shanghai Daily, McDonald’s expressed deep regret over the incident, saying it would maintain a dialogue with Feng.
The local food and drug watchdog is investigating.
