Medical professionals busted in Wuhan kidney-trafficking ring
A KIDNEY trafficking ring involving medical professionals has been busted, with more than 10 members caught, said police in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province.
Police said it was the first well-organized, cross-provincial ring of its kind busted by police in the province, Xinhua news agency reported today. Police received a tip that led them to the ring.
An initial police investigation found the ring offered one-stop service, from helping buyers find donors to arranging surgeries. Huge profits lured medical professionals to take part, police said.
A buyer was charged 400,000 yuan (US$65,280) for a healthy kidney while the donor received only 30,000 yuan. The surgeon could make 130,000 yuan and the anesthetist 30,000 yuan. Nurses were paid 10,000 yuan each and the rest was sent to informers who helped find donors.
