Medical staff punished after blood disposal scandal
THREE medical workers in southwestern China's Sichuan Province have been punished after donated blood ended up with a flower lover to nurture his orchids.
A worker and a dean with the blood department of an unnamed local hospital in Shuangliu County of Sichuan's capital Chengdu City were sacked and another worker has been put on probation, Zhen Ying, media director with Chengdu City Public Health Bureau, said yesterday.
The bureau launched an investigation after the flower lover posted photos online of him using this "high protein fertilizer," sparking an angry public reaction, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.
The investigation showed the city's blood center had distributed the donated blood to Shuangliu blood bank, which then forwarded it to a local hospital, where a blood department worker detected clumps in the blood and decided to dispose of it, Zhen said.
But the worker didn't follow regulations in disposing of it, and instead, gave it to another worker to deal with.
The second worker gave it to a friend, and the blood eventually ended up with the flower lover.
According to regulations, blood to be disposed must first be disinfected before being incinerated or buried to eliminate environment pollution. The blood is not allowed to be sold or used for other purposes.
Dai Hengnan, a junior student at Sichuan University who donated blood two weeks ago, said he felt hurt after learning some donated blood was used to nurture flowers.
But he believed it was an exceptional case and he would continue to donate blood.
