Mega relocation to lift 2.79 million out of poverty
SOME 2.79 million villagers suffering frequent natural disasters and poverty in northwest Shaanxi Province are to be moved to new homes with better conditions next year, Chinese Business View reported today.
The relocation will be the biggest in the country's history since 2006 when the Three Gorges Dam project dislodged nearly 1.5 million residents to make way for the world's biggest dam on the Yangtze River.
But this time, people are moving to seek better life, said Shaanxi government at a press conference yesterday.
The provincial government approved of the plan yesterday, under which 2.4 million people in the province's disaster-prone south and 392,000 in its poverty-stricken north will be relocated, said a government spokesman, Zhao Zhengyong, yesterday.
The relocated villagers are expected to live in towns, enjoying clean tap water, electricity and gas, which are hardly available in their native areas, said Zhao.
More importantly, they can stay away from floods, landslides and other natural disasters that claim dozens of lives every year and cause losses and poverty, Zhao added.
The relocation will be complete by 2020. But Shaanxi government didn't reveal their budget plan and locations of villagers' new homes.
