Melamine victims paid out
MORE than 3,000 families of victims of the country's tainted milk scandal have been compensated in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province.
A total of 3,115 families received 6.44 million yuan (US$941,000) in compensation as of Tuesday, said the Lanzhou Industrial and Commercial Bureau, according to the Lanzhou Morning Post.
Six families refused compensation to file a lawsuit. Another 574 families haven't been compensated due to inaccurate or incomplete information. They can still seek compensation when they provide proper documents.
In an open letter published in December last year, now-bankrupt Sanlu and 21 other dairy companies offered 200,000 yuan each to families whose children died and 30,000 yuan for serious illnesses such as kidney stones and acute kidney failure.
The Ministry of Health said six infants died after drinking contaminated milk products nationwide and 296,000 suffered kidney stones and other urinary problems.
