Men jailed for catching protected birds
Two men were sentenced to jail terms for catching endangered birds last summer, a local court announced yesterday.
Yan, a colleague student in Zhengzhou, capital of central China’s Henan Province, caught 12 Eurasian hobbies together with a friend surnamed Wang in July last year, the court of Huixian County in central China’s Henan province heard.
While one of the birds escaped and one died, the pair sold the remaining 10 online for a total of just over 1,000 yuan (US$156).
Yan and Wang then caught two more Eurasian hobbies and two other types of falcons before they were put into custody by the forestry police bureau in Huixian County. Separately, Yan, who was born in 1994, also illegally bought a crested goshawk.
The court found Yan guilty of hunting and trafficking of endangered animals, sentenced him to 10 years and six months in prison and fined him 10,000 yuan.
Wang received a 10-year jail term and was ordered to pay 5,000 yuan for poaching.
Both men appealed their sentences, but Xinxiang City’s Intermediate People’s Court upheld the original verdict, citing “gross violation” of the law.
The crested goshawk and the Eurasian hobby are both Class-B protected animals in China.
