Men nabbed for dumping chemical wastes illegally
SEVERAL men were held by police in east China's Anhui Province for dumping more than 20 tons of poisonous chemical wastes, Xinhua News Agency reported today.
The wastes and polluted soil was transported by a chemical factory to a company specialized in harmless disposal of polluting chemicals, according the environment watchdog in Lixin County.
Reckless dumping of chemical wastes was firstly reported in Lixin County and Woyang County. The wastes were buried in barrels underground, but some barrels were broken and poisonous liquid seeped into soil and a nearby river.
Initial investigations showed the wastes were from a chemical factory on the coast of Jiangsu Province. They included dichlorobenzene, acetophenone and aniline, all harmful to humans and can cause death.
Lixin County authorities said they had paid 100,000 yuan (US$15,842) in advance to the specialized company in Chuzhou City to dispose of chemicals and polluted soil.
