Men, women should retire at 65, labor official says
A human resources official in Beijing has suggested that men and women should retire at 65 years old by 2045 to offset serious labor shortage in China's rapidly aging society.
The official retirement age, 60 for men and 50 for women, should be extended from 2016, said He Ping, director of the Social Security Research Institute under the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, at a forum in Beijing yesterday, Beijing Times reported.
China's total labor force is expected to drop from 970 million in 2010 to 870 million in 2050. After 2030, China will experience a serious shortfall of labor, the forum learned.
Flexible retirement age was also proposed at the forum. Professionals with high skills should delay their retirement, the report said.
